'The Vampire Diaries' 417 Review - "Because the Night"

CW
If you’ve been reading any of my past reviews for The Vampire Diaries, you’ll know my largest complaint is that the Salvatore brothers always think they know what’s best for Elena and will go to any extreme to push it on her.

CW
We have that again tonight when Damon misleads Elena by bringing her with him to New York on his cure hunt.  Unluckily for Damon, Elena actually has a bit of a brain and Rebekah followed him into the city as well.  I was really disturbed by Damon proclaiming that he’d break Elena’s neck or chain her down and force the cure on her if she didn’t get with the program.  Luckily, Rebekah is nosy and was there to break Damon’s neck so they could give him the slip, not just from the roof but from the city itself.  I’m digging the combo of Elena and Rebekah, even if I’m pretty sure Elena is just exploiting Rebekah and has no intention of letting her have the cure either.  Also I can’t help but notice Elena has a distinctly sapphic leaning when it comes to the people she chooses to munch on. I can’t help but wonder if while on the road she and Reb might indulge in a little something.

CW
We also were treated to or forced to suffer through, whichever you lean toward, another Damon flashback.  I was ultimately disappointed that Lexi fell for Damon’s trick and ended up stranded on the roof. I also was disappointed with the lame-ass excuse he gave for ultimately killing her back in season one that it was out of guilt for that incident so he wouldn’t have to face it...really??

CW
Not that it was much better back in Mystic Falls considering that they were dealing with the villain who has yet to prove himself worthy of any terror, Silas.  Hell, he ultimately wants to take the cure and die so he really isn’t a villain in the same vein that Klaus is anyway.  Of course he’s going to leave quite the mess behind as they did complete the last massacre, well... Caroline did.  It was great that Bonnie ultimately didn’t commit the act as it seemed she would.  But of course Klaus is right that twelve is more than one and if he’d let Bonnie die they’d not have the looming threat of all of their dead enemies coming back to haunt them.  It’s clear that that even though we now know that Bonnie had no memory of anything since the island had she actually killed the witches the fandom would have made her a pariah.  But... because Caroline committed the act I don’t see a line of people forming to hate on blonde vampire barbie.

CW
Back to the whole, ‘is Silas worth our terror’ thing well he’s certainly proved himself bold.  He got the sacrifice done and got ahold of the white oak stake.  He also thinks he can boss Klaus around and get him to bring him the cure, inspite of the fact that it would bring back all his old enemies.  I was almost positive that Silas was actually killing Klaus when he staked him, but apparently he is more valuable to him, and the spin-off, alive.  But that broken-off stake has got to hurt, and will no doubt lead to a lovely shirtless scene with Klaus which...is most of the reason I watch anymore anyway.
