'The Originals' 1.13 "Crescent City" Review

CW
If you were a bit disappointed by the lack of a real witch war on American Horror Story: Coven, well look no further than The Originals where shit just got very real in tonight’s episode.

In the last episode, Rebekah gave Elijah some shit about how he looks down on her for putting love over family when he’d do the same. Nice bit of foreshadowing there considering that’s exactly what Elijah does in this episode.  Sure, you could say he was protecting the baby and the one person who is the easiest to kill among them, but I don’t think Klaus and Rebekah will be so quick to forgive him after that choice. Well Rebekah won’t anyway, as Klaus might buy the whole I was saving your unborn baby thing. But Elijah might still get to spend some time daggered in a box, it all depends on which Klaus we get that episode.

CW
Tonight it was asshole Klaus front and center, threatening to murder Monique and even snapping Marcel’s neck when he got in the way. He wasn’t an asshole however, when it came to Cami and Kieran.  I was actually shocked and delighted that Cami didn’t just stab Klaus with the dagger as ordered to, because she easily could have. It’s clear they’re setting her up for something bigger here and that could even mean her possibly being on their council.  Right now she and her uncle are in a bad spot considering they actually backed the losing team for the time being anyway.

CW
Not that being on the winning team is anything to cheer for either as Celeste and her pack of witches don’t have time for anyone who isn’t a believer. Sophie got to run quite the gamut of emotions this episode before ultimately being killed by her niece, Monique, when she tried to flee from the city and the wrath of Klaus. She was a dead woman walking from the moment she plunged the knife into his chest, though I do question if she’s gone for good. If she is then this is the first major death this season, as Davina definitely has a strong chance of making a return as well. There’s no harvest spell there to protect Sophie, and she could barely use a locator spell so I doubt she had a protection spell going for her either.

CW
Outside of the murder, hexing, and all-out war we had a few bright spots in the episode. The first being that Elijah caught on to the fact that Sabine was in fact Celeste and we were even shown a few flashbacks to earlier episodes highlighting the reasons why. Nice to know he wasn’t completely blindsided by the reveal, but it was hilarious that both romantic makeout moments tonight were bad news for the characters  involved. Elijah was poisoned with an enchantment and Rebekah was mauled by wolves. It’s probably a good thing Elijah and Hayley haven’t kissed yet since she might go into labor on the spot to keep up with the tradition on The Originals of being involved in a romance as a sign of worst things yet to come for you.

CW
The other bright spot was Hayley throwing a party for her family who are only human on the full moon. We finally got to see the face behind the wolf who was protecting her throughout the season, Jackson, and learn why he was protecting her. Turns out they were kind of engaged to be married before Marcel ordered the curse be put on their clan in order to drive them out of the city. I like Jackson, he seems very genuine and sincere, and I’m really interested to see where the story with him and the cursed wolf clan goes. However, I’m willing to bet the people who ship either Klaus and Hayley or Elijah and Hayley both hate him and want to see his head mounted on the wall back at Vampire HQ.
