'Revenge' 3.01 "Fear" Review

ABC
Summer may be over here in real life, but it’s just kicking off in the Hamptons on Revenge as the biggest mystery of the fall begins:  Who pulled the trigger on Emily Thorne?

We’ve been seeing it all over the promotional materials so the opening scene didn’t come as much of a shock to anyone really.  Emily Thorne, ever the blushing bride, says she’s sorry to an unknown assailant before taking two shots to the gut and falling overboard into the ocean.  So now we get to theorize this whodunnit!  My question is will the show stick with the same formula they have over the past two seasons, that being the big mystery involves someone we as an audience haven’t even met yet, or will they shake it up and actually have it be a main character who put two bullets into the woman who has done quite a bit to them over the past two seasons.  If it’s the former, then I have my eye on the newly introduced Margo since she is someone with a lot of history with Daniel Grayson. I suspect she’s being brought in as someone who, unlike Emily, is very compatible with Daniel and may actually even be in love with him.

ABC
Speaking of love and Revenge could Emily’s childhood sweetheart end up being the one?  Considering his masterful ruse with her in The Stowaway where he strung her along, kissed her then declared he felt nothing for her it’s possible he could be the one to pull the trigger.  However, it’s unlikely considering that he later laid down an ultimatum for her to end her revengenda by the end of the summer or he’d expose everything. So Jack really has nothing to gain and no further revelation that could be exposed to him to trigger such a violent episode. Let’s not forget that it could totally be Aiden as the mystery gunman who takes his sweet ass time returning to the show when he shows up on Victoria’s balcony in the very last seconds of the show.  No, I’m kidding I don’t buy for one second that he’s turned on Emily after everything I’ve seen in season two.  If we don’t find out what happened between he and Daniel in last year’s finale soon however, I’m going to be a bit annoyed.  I was so sure he was dead for the longest time so I’m thrilled he’s back.  Yay Aiden!
ABC
Enough with the big mystery for now, let’s talk red sharpie x’s and who got one right across their face tonight.  First and foremost Ashley was moved out of the picture this evening.  I’m sad to see her go but it was delightful to see Emily and Victoria work beside one another in order to remove the thorn from their mutual sides.  I’m shocked Ashley made it out alive because she knows so much about the secrets and lies of these Hamptonites. But considering that she’s still alive I’d not be shocked if this wasn’t the last we’ve seen of her. Also, did anyone else notice that what Emily pulled on Conrad was nearly identical to what she did to him in the pilot episode?  Back then she poisoned his soup to give him a fake heart attack and expose his affair with another woman to Victoria. Tonight she poisoned his water in order for Conrad to collapse at the podium thus ending his career in politics before it could truly take off by making it look like he may be afflicted with Huntington’s Disease. I wonder how long Emily can keep up the ruse of an ailing Conrad or if he’ll simply have tests performed that she doesn’t manipulate which will give him a clean bill of health. If it’s that easy for Conrad to prove he isn’t sick then it’d be in Em’s best interest to keep making sure she’s around to mess with future test results so her lie will live. If he finds out I dare say that Conrad wouldn’t be against killing the woman who single-handedly ended his aspirations for a presidential run. This does make me concerned however since Conrad said Huntington’s does run in the Grayson family so even if Conrad is clean it doesn’t mean his entire family has been given a clean bill of health. Maybe Daniel will suffer for this ultimately.
ABC
Last but not least, let’s not forget about the introduction of Victoria’s newly in the flesh long lost son, Fox Crane... I mean Patrick.  Let’s be real here, everyone who introduces him as Justin Hartley of Smallville probably doesn’t realize the continued crossover appeal a former Passions actor would have for Revenge’s audience. We didn’t learn too much about Patrick in this episode. Apparently, he’s an artist and doesn’t seem to have an ulterior motive for being there. But what about the other Grayson sibling, Charlotte? In their continued mission to make us and themselves forget season two happened for the most part, Charlotte lost her baby. Following this tragedy, she graduated early and jet-set around Europe until she wound up in Paris only to discover that her parents sold their home there. Remember how Aidan drained their bank accounts at the end of season two? There’s some of the fallout of that action.

ABC
Nothing puts a grin on my face like a good episode of Revenge and the season premiere didn’t disappoint in the least.  I hope that those who tuned out during season two will come back and give the show another chance. Especially considering that Emily certainly feels like she’s back at her best right now.
