'Sleepy Hollow' 1.08 "Necromancer" Review

Fox
Well who would have thought that a simple case of ‘she’s just not that into you’ could go so far as to help create a major player in the End of Days? It’s a common occurrence that men often fight wars for their women. But in this case it’s on an apocalyptic scale as we found out the true identity of the Horseman was someone quite important in the shared past of both Ichabod and Katrina Crane--his ex best friend and her former betrothed. I just wish the reveal would’ve been a little more thrilling as it became pretty obvious halfway through that the random suddenly important guy in Ichabod’s flashback would serve a purpose in the episode that was solely focused on Headless himself.

Fox
I loved how Abbie dismissed the whole nature of Ichabod and Abraham’s feud over Katrina as being ‘so eighteenth century'. Perfect reaction from a modern kick-ass lady like Detective Mills. Really it’s unfortunate that a character like Katrina, who is a known witch with a good deal of power, is relegated to the role of being someone else’s spoils of war. I keep hoping we’ll get better from this character as the series winds down its first year but so far we haven't been given much to show for it.

In fact, the only thing I have to wonder about from the grand reveal that the Horseman was an incidental nemesis of Ichabod during his life would be: is it really that damn easy to create one of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse? Apparently all it seems to take is a quick shave and a fancy mask from some Hessians and you get to join Moloch’s elite servants on Earth. That and a dose of bitter emotion felt during death seems to help the process along. So it also has to make us think that we may yet see one of our own team fall to the dark side against their will.

Fox
Using humans as vessels and puppets does come with a price however as their emotions can get in the way of the mission at hand. We saw this tonight with Headless Abraham trying to go against Moloch’s wishes and kill Ichabod right away. Only the actions of minion of the month Andy Brooks stopped him, well that and a horde of Moloch’s bat-faced henchmen. Andy too suffers from holding onto his human emotions as he lets his affections for Abbie steer him into dangerous directions. This certainly levels the playing field to a degree as this way it feels more like both sides of combatants have flaws in addition to their many strengths--keeps things interesting as the war truly begins.

We’ve already seen the various members of team evil, but now this episode gave us a proper look at the End of Days warriors comprised of Abbie, Ichabod, Jenny, and Captain Irving. Sure, we’ve seen Abbie and Ichabod battle the forces of evil frequently but tonight’s unexpected pairing of win had to be Irving and Jenny. Both used their special skills to contribute to the cause of keeping the Horseman incapacitated until Crane could get something useful out of him. They also blasted the hell out of Moloch’s minions and that alone is reason enough to keep them on the team for future efforts. It's great that the series isn't afraid to just bust out with creepy bat-faced creatures at the drop of a dime. Keeps the constant threat of danger high and that makes things exciting to watch. Hopefully we'll see this fierce foursome continue the battle together. It's clear they're going to need every single skill set they can come across to keep their very souls from being obliterated.
