'The Originals' 106 "Fruit of the Poisoned Tree" Review

CW
I’d like to start this review off by welcoming Elijah back.
Yes, we all know that he returned to his family last week, but I’m not referring to that. I’m referring to the badass, heart ripping, ‘I will kill you myself if you hurt my family’ Elijah.  Leaps and bounds from what he was in the re-shot pilot as well as what they turned him into back on the mothership. I welcome this more badass and relaxed Elijah with open arms.

CW
Elijah’s return to form surprised me, and that’s what I’m really enjoying about The Originals is that they’re really shaking things up by putting characters into roles you may not have guessed.  Take for example Devina, the young super powered witch who Marcel saved and only mere episodes ago proclaimed that she was going to find a way to kill the originals. Well now she’s on Team Original.  You have to hand it to Elijah, the man knows how to charm people onto his side and keeping his word helps.

CW
Unlike Elijah when Klaus goes to deal with things he never gets the same reaction and adoration that his brother does. This happened again tonight when, in his own misguided sense of generosity toward Cami by avenging her brother for her, it backfires in his face.  Yes, he had no right to take away her pain or mess with her mind with compulsion--both of these acts were quite selfish indeed. So it’s no surprise that Cami reacts in a very violent way to it all and vows to have whatever he did undone and that afterward he’ll wish he hadn’t met her. I can’t help but wonder what would happen if, after one of his misguided attempts to help someone, Klaus actually got that thank you or look of admiration that Elijah so often gets.  It would probably be too much for him to process and he’d kill them to bring things back to an emotional level he’s more comfortable with.

CW
While Klaus didn’t get to kill the last remaining witch elder, Agnes, tonight Elijah did.  Apparently she’s the only one who could perform certain rituals for them, such as the harvest, so in snapping her neck he’s theoretically doomed the witch community.  I’m curious if they’re setting Sophie up as a continued adversary especially considering their deal with her is off and she’s no longer linked to Hayley now.  Sophie’s either going to turn into an amped up big bad for the originals, or she’s not going to be long for this world. They set up so much witchy backstory in the last episode that it would be a shame to see it all be gone because of tonight’s actions. Who knows, maybe in total desperation she’ll make a last ditch effort by turning to a somewhat unlikely ally such as Marcel.

CW
I think Marcel would take all the help he can get as things are really heading for a boiling point between he and Klaus. I didn’t realize the house that the family is staying at was originally the same plantation where Marcel was a slave..ouch.  Also, I was really glad to see Thierry back when Marcel broke him out of his ‘garden’ to have a conversation with the one person that he could trust.  Did Marcel brick him in again, or will we see his right hand man fully back at his side in the near future?

CW
We certainly won’t be seeing Rebekah at Marcel’s side soon which, after episodes of tension, they finally fuck once Rebekah declares she’s leaving town.  I have to say, while I enjoy the scenes Rebekah has with Hayley I can’t help but be irritated at how she’s so often reduced to supernatural nanny and housekeeper.  Elijah and Klaus need to show her some respect and let her in on the ass-kicking action--we all know she can handle it.  Also, did Rebekah really think that simply asking Marcel to leave with her was going to work?  Marcel is basically just like Klaus and he’d never back down from his empire like that, not even for love.
