'The Originals' 1.14 "Long Way Back from Hell" Review

CW
Secrets come out and sibling on sibling violence ensues on tonight’s new episode of The Originals!

As a fan of Klaus, this episode included something that I daresay we haven’t seen from an episode of The Originals OR The Vampire Diaries for his character-- genuine affection and interest from a female character.  Yes even back in 1919 Genevieve said if she had to pick a Mikaelson brother then it would be Klaus she was most into and it was very evident in their time together in the present.  Klaus may have been strapped down to a chair throughout, but Genevieve’s seduction of him while outing Rebekah was very enjoyable. Who am I kidding, seeing Klaus shirtless and strapped down was the most enjoyable part of it all. The fact that Klaus didn’t just immediately kill the messenger once she unstrapped him also has me curious about what role Genevieve has yet to play in the episodes to come.

CW
Celeste knew exactly the right witches to bring back who’d have enough beef with the Mikaelsons in order to bring her plan to fruition.  I have to say, I was shocked at what Rebekah did to Genevieve and the witch that Celeste was inhabiting at the time. All Genevieve did was what was asked of her and she’s rewarded with a slow, painful death in isolation dying from a particularly nasty strain of the flu.  It’s almost too perfect of a reason to be royally pissed off at Rebekah all this time later. Couldn’t she have just as easily killed them more quickly (neck snapping is brutal but far more humane here) than to have them suffer so? There’d still be a want for revenge either way. Speaking of the plan… apparently Celeste claims to just want some epic brother vs brother action which will lead to both their downfalls. Is that seriously all she wants is to break their family bond?  Why? That really seems a bit weak to me, and I’m still not clear on her motivations so hopefully we’ll get a flashback to lay that into place soon.

CW
What we do know already about Celeste is that she hopped through a hell of a lot of witch bodies to get where she is today. One of those being the Devereux witch who put the curse on Hayley’s family for Marcel. I hope I wasn’t the only one who cheered when Hayley knocked her out at the end of the episode, but I think the wolf might be in a bit over her head there unless she tells Elijah. I get the feeling however that Elijah is going to be otherwise occupied with Klaus now that he daggered him so Rebekah and Marcel could escape his wrath.

CW
From the pace of storytelling we’ve seen so far this season, I know that Klaus won’t be down for the count for long and that Rebekah and Marcel won’t be running from him for eternity either.  I’m just really hoping we’ll see some real character development from Klaus because he can’t go on forever loving his siblings one moment and trying to murder them the next.  They need to find and remember their ‘always and forever’ again.
