If you’ve been watching The Originals then you’ll notice that they're really big on daddy issues. With the finale approaching and the impending birth of hybrid princess Mikaelson, the daddy issues are emerging now more than ever in several different forms.
From day one of watching The Vampire Diaries there was one relationship that I’d always wished they’d go into more detail on. The relationship between a vampire and the one who sired them is often complicated and ripe with storytelling potential. Now, I’m not talking about the season four Damon and Elena 'sire bond' shenanigans--I’m talking about the idea of being able to choose your family by making them in your image. So far the first season of The Originals has shown this power-shifting dance between Klaus and Marcel, a sire and his make. Marcel is ever so much Klaus’ son and this was especially reiterated in both his present-day actions as well as tonight's flashbacks scenes. Everything Marcel’s ever done stems from the very ideals Klaus instilled in him while raising him. Klaus ideally didn’t want the vampiric life for Marcel, even after he promised it to him, and in the end only gave it to him when there was little other option. Klaus is wedged into a place where he wants to forgive Marcel, but his own pride and greed are preventing it. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree with Marcel as it's his pride too that won't allow him to bend a knee to Klaus again.
While Marcel remains a problem for Klaus there is still another impending threat that unbeknownst to him is a bit more urgent to deal with, his father. With the wall of the other side disintegrating (thanks TVD!) the residents trapped between are determined to not go quietly into the dark. This includes Mikael, a character that over on TVD was such a wet blanket and easily dispatched-of threat that I couldn't much understand why Klaus was ever so afraid of him. But in his appearances on The Originals, Mikael has really been shining. This is the asshole that makes the big bad tremble in fear, or wake up in a cold sweat after having a nightmare about him. So is it wrong that part of me hopes Davina can in fact bring him back from the dead? I certainly don’t want Klaus and Elijah to run again, but I think they’d stand up and fight back this time. Besides, anything that keeps Sebastian Roche` on my screen can't be a bad thing ultimately.
Part of the reason they’d be fighting back is the aforementioned princess Mikaelson. This damn show has hooked me on the hybrid baby plot development, so much so that I don’t want the baby to die. And I remember so clearly how pissed I was at the idea during the backdoor pilot. It's certainly been a great opportunity to see other sides to a character like Klaus who is clearly putting forth extra effort. He's even put together an adorable nursery right next to Hayley’s bedroom because he would prefer their child has both parents around during her upbringing...oh and Elijah.
