'The Originals' 1.21 "The Battle of New Orleans" Review

CW
Tonight on The Originals, we’re reminded of the importance of answering your phone when a friend calls.
Alright, so maybe Cami and Hayley aren’t the best of friends but if she’s calling you then don’t you think it’s truly a little bit urgent?  The kind of urgency that comes from the whole, ‘surprise there’s a secret long thought dead werewolf family right there about to double-cross you all’, thing. I suppose it’s a good thing Hayley missed that call as this episode sure put us in quite the crazy space before the season finale where nearly all of the main characters were in some form of peril. So we got our all-out war finally and as far as casualties so far well everyone is in quite a bit of limbo right now.  Marcel and his vampires are all either suffering werewolf bites or torn limb from limb, and Hayley’s giving birth to a child the witches can’t wait to sacrifice.

So the question of the hour is: will the baby survive?  Babies on genre fare don’t usually add much to the drama other than a  need to protect them, but that can get stale fast. And while I have wondered if we’d get an advanced aging scenario the idea that the baby won’t make it out of the finale period has come to mind as well. It’s funny how many people I’ve seen who want the baby to survive compared to a little over a year ago. That being said, The Originals has always struck me as a classic tale of tragedy. Nothing could be more tragic for Klaus than losing this baby and it would send him spiralling right back into much darker territory. The Klaus we have now is not the same man we began the series with, and neither is Elijah.  The loss of the child could send both the brothers down a grim path, and I’d hate to be the one standing in their way afterward.

There may be one person standing in their way when the dust has settled, Mikeal.  Ahhh... Papa Original, I’d love to have you back around although I get the feeling there’s going to be a catch as there so frequently is when the dead returns. Earlier in the season we established that Celeste hopped from body to body on her path of vengeance. If Davina is capable of bringing Mikael’s spirit back, then I’m pretty damn sure she probably couldn’t bring his body back as well.  So he’d need a capable vessel and who better than Marcel? It’s easy to picture Marcellus at the end of the war with his army fallen. By that point there wouldn’t be much for him to do storywise other than straight up die. And that would be such a waste of the relationship they’d spent all season establishing with Klaus and other characters in the French Quarter. Also, we’d get the pleasure of seeing Charles Michael Davis be a real evil bastard again! He’s so very very good when he’s bad.

CW
On a final note to perhaps ease some fears for Klaus fans regarding his ability to survive the events of the finale. As established over on The Vampire Diaries, if you kill an original, then their entire line dies as well. Should Klaus die, not only would every vampire in New Orleans die, but so would everyone on The Vampire Diaries too.  That’s right guys, if Klaus dies then the triangle falls, so you can be damn sure that he won’t. That doesn’t mean he won’t suffer a great deal however as this action-packed debut season arrives to its conclusion.
