Rumple has never had much luck with the ladies and this week
we see that his relationship with Bae’s mother wasn’t a high mark in his romantic
career. She left him to go shack up with the dangerous and charming pirate captain, Killian Jones (Colin O’Donoghue in his OUAT debut). This is the starting
point of two tales really. The first being how Rumple losing his first love
would go on to affect his future relationship with Belle, and the second would
fit Rumple into yet another role in the storyland universe, that of the
crocodile haunting the future Captain Hook. It’s funny really when so many of
our known characters wind up being major facets of other stories outside of their
own because it makes you wonder just how many people in Storybrooke were any of
the main fairytale characters at all since those positions seem to have been
filled.

By telling the story of Milah in relation to both Rumple and
Killian we’re getting to see how true love affected two different people. It’s
also giving us groundwork for things yet to come in the overall story. The way
in which Rumple’s relationship ended with Milah led him to become bitter, and
yes beastly, toward the notion of love. When we think back to season one and up
until now it’s clear now that we know how Milah betrayed Rumple by leaving
him we’re supposed to be that much more sympathetic toward his sometimes harsh
treatment of Belle.

It’s a case of the old 'he holds on too tightly because he
doesn’t want to be left alone again' thing, but it doesn’t quite excuse how the
pairing is being handled now. Already it seems as though every episode with a
Rumbelle focus will center around the following: she’ll get upset by his use of
magic and run off to find herself in peril, he’ll find and save her
all by using magic, she’ll break up with him, and then practically rescind it
by episode’s end. The whole thing comes off like a Taylor Swift song when Belle
told off Mr. Gold in the mines in this episode—they’re never ever ever getting
back together, like ever. Until they do of course, because this show seems
almost unwilling to irritate the segment of the fandom that lives and breathes
this ship. It makes Belle appear to be fairly codependent that she can’t quite
shut the door on Rumple and try to find her happiness with someone else when it’s
clear too that he’s a man in which darkness is such a part of his core now that it
can never fully be gone from him.

The one decent Belle-related thing that came out of this
episode was the fact that she will, hopefully, be finding a life of her own as
a contributing member of the Storybrooke community. She’s going to be taking
over as the town librarian and preparing to open the doors of the once boarded
off building which should provide some level of purpose for her outside of
being with Mr. Gold. The library detail is one that I always loved from season
one in how Regina knew what a danger it would be to have access to books which are
all portals in their own way to strange and far-off lands outside of the town
lines. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s made clear that Gold’s new mission
in life is to break the new curse affecting anyone who tries to leave so that
he can go find Bae. That’s great story continuity that now that magic is back he
can have a powerful tool on his side to try and truly find his long-lost son. What's truly intriguing to wonder is, much in the same way that there is no mayor Regina alter ego, since there was never really a Mr. Gold to start with if crossing the town line will have an effect on Rumple. It could well be a case of his cowardice getting the better of him once more and perhaps this season he'll be forced to cross that line.

As for how Milah’s presence in the story of Killian Jones,
her demise (at Rumple’s own hand as he wrenched her heart free from her chest)
charted a course for revenge for Jones to follow against Rumple that he’s still
on today. It’s been mentioned that this season Emma is going to find herself
with a few surprising suitors and it isn’t like Killian and she don’t have a
few key things in common. Namely that they’ve both experienced very similar
situations regarding the loss of a love with Rumple killing Milah and Regina
crushing the captured heart of former sheriff, Graham. So there's one thing they have in common right off the bat. What’s interesting in how
Killian is now poised to be against Rumple is that you could argue Emma is no
longer quite so with Regina. The writers on this show do love a redemption story and
having Cora be a big part of season two could truly allow Regina’s misdeeds be
set aside when there’s a nastier evil presence to band together against in the form
of her mother. Even though we see Killian paired up with Cora for now, he proved with Rumple once already when he tricked him out of access to the magic bean that he's clever enough to not be worth fully trusting.

As for Colin O’Donoghue’s big first episode as Hook well he
definitely left an impression. The writing of the character must be praised for
not letting him be uber-piratey. He drank but wasn’t a drunk, he was obviously
promiscuous but could fall for someone, and he didn’t say any cheesy pirate
lines in the episode. Overall, O’Donoghue’s performance brought a real spark of
a scoundrel’s charm to the episode, and in the weeks to come it’s exciting to
imagine what the character has up his sleeve. Not to mention his character’s
actions are setting off into Neverland at some point in the story and I know we
all can’t wait to see what the Once
version of that land has waiting to be found in it.
Next week we finally--FINALLY get to know the identity of Doctor Whale in his storybook past. Unless you were watching the US promo that is, in which case you basically already know. For one of their big long-time secrets they sure were quick to give that one up, but he's probably got a few twisty inter-related roles under his belt ala Rumple being himself, the beast, and now the crocodile.
