'The Vampire Diaries' 410 "After School Special" Review

CW
An open letter to Bonnie Bennett:

Hey girl, sup?  I see your dad is the mayor now, that’s cool. Also, glad you’ve gotten your magic groove back and all but I think you need to open your eyes a bit.  You see you have a habit of getting used by like every character around you especially your bff Elena.  So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that your mentor is also using the shit out of you.  You’d think the creepy human bone necklace would be a tip-off, but apparently even him telling you that you’re the key to everything doesn’t seem to phase you.  While some might think they’re trying to lead you into a buffy-esque dark Willow storyline I really don’t think the writers care about you that much.  In closing, basically run.

CW
Now that I got that off my chest let’s talk about the rest of the episode.  We got the much-needed return of Rebekah and she brought Kol back with her.  At this point, Kol still hasn’t proven to me why I should give any more of a shit about him than I did Finn.  Except Kol is really the first person to come out and say this Silas guy that Shane (aka the creepiest guy in the world) wants to unearth is bad news.  Here’s why I don’t think so: everyone talked about Klaus the same way back in the day, and I figure Silas will be the same in that all bark no bite.  I give it a season before we have Silas at the Mystic Grill sharing a drink with Damon.

CW
So while I really don’t care about Kol, I was thrilled to see Rebekah back in action and she was used as a clever device to catch us all up on what happened before the break. Which to be honest I really didn’t need to be reminded of the love triangle melodrama, but we win some we lose some.  She also said that she wants the cure before everyone else so she can decide what to do with it which seems to include forcibly curing Klaus then murdering him.  I should be quaking in my boots about her threat toward Klaus, but honestly I don’t think a real cure exists. However, if Kol is to be believed that Silas will kill them all then what better cure for vampires could there be than another immortal hellbent on killing them. (A bit of a rehash of Papa Original but I bet they’ll make Silas a hottie, not that Sebastian Roche isn’t one of course).

CW
Let’s not forget the big news of the possible spin-off based just on The Originals and starring Joseph Morgan.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said I’d watch a show just about the Originals.  If it does well and they’re able to get Daniel Gillies on board for the series then I think it’ll be a lock for a pickup.  Can you just imagine pairing them together on Thursday and all the opportunities for crossover?  Plus it’s a chance for the mothership to find new villains and still keep Klaus around without woobieing him beyond repair.

CW
I know there were a bunch of other things that went down in the episode including Elena telling Damon she wuvs him.  But if you haven’t noticed by now I enjoy writing about the episode while avoiding talking about the triangle drama as much as possible. As the first episode back from hiatus it’s a good start to the year. Now let’s just see if they can keep the melodrama to a minimum from now on especially with Elena firmly with Damon.
