'The Originals' 1.10 "The Casket Girls" Review

CW
Tonight on The Originals we experience a resurgence in girl power that the show has been lacking for the past few episodes, and boy did it ever feel good.
Now I am all for the antics of Klaus and Marcel, but Klaus’s struggle to wrangle back control has shoved every female out of the way out one point or another. In the case of Sophie and the witches they've been shoved completely out of the show for several episodes while they licked their wounds. So now that Klaus and Marcel are "sharing" the throne of New Orleans, naturally his next challenge would come from those he oppressed along the way.

CW
You could argue that no one is being oppressed more than the woman who's carrying his child, Hayley.  After she gets a call from Sophie, who reveals that her family was the one who put the curse on Hayley’s family and therefore her bloodline connection can remove said curse, Hayley agrees to help the witch. Sophie's trying to find Celeste, Elijah’s witchy former lover, so she can consecrate the remains in one last grasp for power.  It turns out however that bringing Celeste back into the picture is going to be bad news because Davina has been scribbling parts of her face during her frantic painting sessions while she lived in the attic. Davina claimed that whatever she was drawing was evil.  No one would have more of a bone to pick with Klaus than Celeste does considering he was likely the one who murdered her. It's worth wondering if tonight was set-up for her to come back from the grave and be the big bad for the later half of the season. Especially now that the fortunes of the witches seems to be reversing for the better.

CW
Tasting freedom once more, Davina is really stepping forward as major threat and one that I get the feeling will be dealt with in a way in the next episode.  As usual this show enjoys not letting people have a happy ending when Klaus successfully poisons and kills Davina’s crush, Tim.  Kind of knew he was a dead man walking the moment he learned too much about everything that was happening.  Davina herself would be dead next to him if it weren't for Marcel ordering the still-alive Sabine to put a protection spell on her. I love how Marcel knows Klaus enough to anticipate his plan B, and I really wish we'd have seen more of those back-up machinations on The Vampire Diaries--would have spiced things up more there if he wasn't so easily thwarted constantly. To Marcel, Davina is his family and sadly for him I don't think she’s going to be forgiving him any time soon, but if anyone could achieve some kind of redemption in her eyes I'd hope it would be him.

CW
Of course now that we have Klaus on top we can’t let him stay there unchecked, and while I believe the witch storyline with Celeste may be the big thing that carries us out of the season we do have a new challenger stepping up to take the Throne.  That opponent is Rebekah, spurned by Marcel again and simply sick of Klaus’s bullshit that she's rising to the challenge and taking action against them. She’s taking a kinder approach in her quest to gain new allies from all corners--humans, witches, and vampires alike-- by showing them she can be trusted.  One surprising new ally she’s turning to is none other than Thierry, who’s still bricked up behind a wall, but not quite as hungry as the other vampires there seeing as Rebekah is bringing him blood bags. I’m hoping that Rebekah's resolve can hold true and she can have a real go at teaching her brother a lesson because she can be notoriously wishy-washy.

CW
Last but not least Cami, one of the very few humans in the story, learns everything after undergoing some brutal de-compulsion. She uses her knowledge to get right up in Klaus's face to threaten him. Of course, you have to wonder what she by herself can do against all the supernatural forces she’s facing.  Right now I'd assume she’d join Rebekah and Devina on team girl power, especially considering the other witches are the reason her brother went psycho. I just really hope she doesn't end up glamoured again so somebody order her a margarita with extra vervain, stat!
