'The Originals' 1.11 "Après Moi, Le Déluge" Review

CW
Tonight on The Originals emotions, and the four elements, ran high as the race was on to complete the harvest ritual. In the rush and mayhem surrounding this endeavor, everyone whether helping or hindering in the quest, felt their relationships shaken up in surprising ways.  Davina and her relationship with Marcel took center stage amidst the impending chaos as a difficult choice had to be made.

CW
As you may recall in the last episode Klaus totally poisoned her and her true love Tim, only Tim was the one who ended up dying because of it.  So naturally she blames everyone especially Marcel because, as she puts it, he’s Klaus’ best friend forever.  Luckily, Davina comes around during the episode even though she angrily tosses Marcel across the room several times beforehand to do the only thing that can save New Orleans. We’ve seen that Marcel cares quite a lot about her inspite of the fact that he exploited her magic to keep the witches oppressed, but remember the magic ban didn’t come into play until after Marcel stopped the first harvest ritual and saved Davina.  After they make up Davina finally comes to terms that she is out of control and has to let them complete the ritual or let everyone burn with her. Elena Gilbert, take note of the actual selfless teenager in the room.

They had to jump through a lot of hoops in this episode to make Sophie an elder so she could complete the harvest but none of the girls come back to life during the reaping. I’m not one hundred percent convinced that Davina and the other girls are for sure gone for good yet, especially after the reveal at the end of the episode.  Marcel doesn’t know that however, and he’s beside himself in grief and anger mostly toward Klaus. Surprisingly,  the entire episode we’ve had Klaus be downright decent after the shit he pulled last week. So instead of an angry shouting match we get the tender side of Klaus who embraces Marcel and tells him that he can fully empathize with Marcel’s loss because it’s how he felt when he believed Marcel to be dead after they fled New Orleans many years ago. Can I hope that Klaus really picks up the banner and leads the fight to find a way to bring Davina back for Marcel?  Hell, maybe that’s the reason he’s taking a trip up to Mystic Falls this week to get some other witchy advice on the matter.

Speaking of witches, guess who’s been alive for over a year and running around as another witch?  If you guessed Celeste, then you’re right!  Tonight’s reveal that Sabine is actually Celeste certainly casts a new light on everything she’s done this season leading up to tonight. I wonder how she feels about the fact that Elijah was complicit with bringing what he thought were her remains to be consecrated. We’re certainly going to see if his breaking that promise holds any weight with her. Of course with every question answered another remains, like how the hell did she come back in the first place?  Celeste isn’t about to join the party alone as she resurrects three other witches at the end of the episode. One was the elder that was active with the harvest, but we don’t know about the other two yet. The question remains did the reaping bring them back instead of the girls and if so, why just three and not four?

CW
Everything that happened tonight is going to put a major dent in Rebekah’s plans to overthrow the boys. She even backed the wrong witch so to speak by asking Sophie to be on her side and her other witch is quite dead at the moment.  Thierry is also getting impatient with her, and can you blame the guy, but obviously Klaus and Marcel will notice if he’s suddenly not bricked behind a wall anymore.  It seems like if her plans are going to have any real weight to them they’re taking a back seat to the rise of Celeste and the resurgence of witch power in New Orleans along with the fallout that’s to come. Is Rebekah’s girl power alliance already powerless?  Say it isn’t so!
