'The Originals' 1.02 "House of the Rising Son" Review

CW
Tonight marked the second episode of The Originals, on its regular night and time and what I hope will prove to be the true format that will run through the season.  Where the first episode felt like recap/retcon hell, this episode provided quite a few origin stories when it came to the relationships the original family had with each other and Marcel in New Orleans, and it was freaking amazing.

CW
This episode was also brightened by Rebekah’s flashy entrance into town, where she kills six of Marcel’s men in a bar because they were getting a bit fresh with her. While we didn’t get to see the whole thing go down the editing choice of flashing from Marcel finding out that six of his men were dead over to Rebekah wiping a bit of blood off her face was just the right wink at any new viewers so they know that the Mikaelson sister is not to be fucked with.  We also find out that Klaus isn’t the only sibling to have a deeper relationship with Marcel. I hope we see more flirtation between the Rebekah and Marcel this season, but I’m not sure if it’s going to happen considering just how bad the breakup was. Marcel decided to let Rebekah stay daggered (for fifty two years apparently) and become a vampire instead of remain human and save her.  But honestly, who the hell could blame him?  I know I’d take the same deal in a heartbeat.

CW
I’m also glad we got the basics of why Klaus and Marcel were so close at the start of the series rather than later.  I wouldn’t have guessed however that Klaus knew Marcel ever since he was a young child, or that Klaus gave his protege his name, Marcellus (after Mars the god of war).  Funnily enough, we find out that Marcel’s relationship with Rebekah wasn’t the tipping point for why that relationship fell apart.  No, it’s the fact that after the siblings fled New Orleans, after being chased down by their father, they all assumed Marcel had been dead and all mourned for him.  Instead of finding them again Marcel stayed, thrived, and took everything the Mikealsons once had all for himself.  Again, this may piss Klaus off but we all know he would do the same thing so Marcel was really only doing what he was taught to do.

CW
I also can’t stress enough how much I love all of the thought Marcel has put into running his empire.  When he lays down how his club and vampire hierarchy works in the beginning of the episode I was impressed.  Not draining humans on purpose, healing them with their blood, no missing tourists  and well-fed vampires equals (almost) everyone being happy in the Quarter!  I honestly feel like being around the habits of Klaus and the others inspired him to do the opposite when it came to control. Let’s be real, Klaus if you were still running the town I doubt it would be this tidy. Unless of course he was still in good with Marcel, but again it would be all Marcel’s doing and Klaus would be fucking it up at damn near every turn.

CW
Speaking of Klaus’s prowess for fucking things up, Klaus gave Elijah’s body to Marcel as a show of good faith but little did he know that Marcel has his secret weapon: Devina. By the end of the episode Marcel has ordered her to use Elijah to find a way to once and for all kill an original vampire.  It’s a great way to keep Elijah out of the way, yes he still shows up in flashbacks every so often but his generally annoying honor bit  is kept out of the way so the fun can begin.  I’d like to see the other brothers more as well, maybe Kol at least as I believe Finn was daggered through the entire duration of their stay there as he’s a big old party pooper and no one should miss him.

CW
Now, I know I’ve spent this whole review so far giving Klaus shit for sucking more often than not at coming up with and executing plans, but he is in fact trying to lay down a plan of action against Marcel.  So when we get the reveal of him setting his pieces into play this whole time it made me really excited that we won’t just be getting a Klaus who pouts and strangles everyone who pisses him off.  I also enjoyed his interactions with Hayley this episode, who almost ended her little magical wolf baby’s life with a little wolfsbane.  Honestly, I don’t know if it would be that easy to kill which may be a reveal coming later in the season. We’ve seen that when Hayley leaves the house she almost gets her head ripped off right away so I’m not sure what she’s going to do this season other than sit around the mansion looking bored and pregnant.
