'The Originals' 1.05 "Sinners and Saints" Review

CW
If you were one hundred percent certain that Marcel was the grand villain of the story, then clearly you haven’t been paying attention.
Tonight’s episode only further showed that Klaus’s goal of taking back the quarter is one that’s going to brew in the background as bigger threats step forward. We learned more about the odd relationship Marcel has with Devina, and well it turns out her saved her life from the other witches. She was one of the four girls chosen for a ritual called the Harvest, in which the girls would be sacrificed and brought back to life again as a way to buff up their power with their ancestors.  Of course, we later find out the ritual is legit (despite how bloody the sacrifice turned out to be which spooked Davina), and she was allegedly going to be reborn afterward. So in saving her life has Marcel ultimately cost the lives of three other girls?

CW
One of those girls is Sophie’s niece, yeah shocking family connections are really a theme in this episode.  Bringing the Originals down to New Orleans was Sophie and her sister’s last ditch effort to try to stop Marcel and get their hands on Devina to complete the ritual. Let’s not overlook that at this time Marcel hadn’t forbidden magic in the quarter, in fact he and Sophie were seeing each other in secret.  Again we’re treated to the opposite of some epic Romeo and Juliet love, and instead it’s more of what Marcel describes as a ‘mutually satisfying hookup.’  Sophie is a woman of many secrets, and I doubt we’ve learned the last of them either as Elijah later postulates that she’s more dangerous than anyone right now simply because she has nothing to lose.  As of right now, I can’t really tell whose side I’m on. After all, we’ve seen these witches do some pretty shitty things including to their own kind.

CW
We find out one of those things was that they were ultimately behind the tragic massacre Cami’s brother was involved in.  That’s right they hexed him to slowly lose his mind as a distraction to keep Father Kieran off their ass. Father Kieran is thus revealed to be Cami’s uncle; when this show says it’s about family they don’t mean just of the original vampire variety.  Also, is it just me or does Cami’s twin brother look like he’s about five years younger than she is?  I’d expect someone who looks a bit older especially considering the flashback scene only took place eight months ago. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see if Klaus tells Cami about the information or if he’ll attempt to take revenge on her behalf instead..

CW
I think that one of the best things they’re doing with this show is that where their hero was the villain on the other series, they’re keeping everyone in a morally gray area instead. The originals aren’t the good guys, Marcel isn’t the bad guy, but they all have their own motivations and codes they abide by.  As I said earlier I can’t decide what side I’m on as far as Marcel and the Witches are concerned.  Part of me wants to say fuck the witches over what they’re doing with Hayley and what they did to Cami’s brother. However, Marcel is being power hungry and selfish by keeping Devina locked away (could he be any more like Klaus, it’s wonderful). And now with Elijah back in action we’re going to have to see how the very honorable vampire maneuvers this minefield of moral quandary.  I think in the end it’s all going to come down to the most important thing for him, fighting for his family.
