'The Originals' 1.04 "Girl in New Orleans" Review

CW
This week on The Originals, the show starts to put a new mystery into play while giving a few of its characters a hell of a lot more backstory than they had before.

This episode was very heavy on Cami. It’s not surprising considering the show opened to Klaus monologuing to her--letting her in on the whole vampire aspect of it all.  I kinda loved that instead of her eventually finding out in some dramatic fashion she just gets it all dumped on her in the introduction of an episode. He says she’s going to be his stenographer for his memoirs, his own literal ‘vampire diaries’ if you will.  Also, even though Klaus totally compels her not to be afraid, her reactions to him and the concept of compulsion were still really amusing.

CW
Letting Cami in on the secret sheds light on her own burden she’s been carrying around.  We learn that her twin brother massacred a bunch of people in a church, however she claimed that he was simply an aspiring priest and didn’t have any mental issues previous to this.  So finding out about vampires and compulsion allows her to put two and two together… until Klaus makes her forget that connection while vowing he’ll make whoever did it pay. I found the scene upsetting, but Klaus has a point and as we all know people can remember what they were compelled to do so I’m sure at some point she’s going to remember this. If she’ll be pissed at Klaus or not will remain to be seen.  Personally, I really enjoy the chemistry Klaus has with Cami so I hope people give them a chance instead of shrieking and clutching to Klaroline while demanding she as well as Hayley be tossed into a flaming bus.

CW
Not that a flaming bus could kill Hayley as we’ve seen tonight.  Turns out her baby has magical healing blood just like her daddy so Hayley is going to be one hard girl to kill.  Apparently actual wild wolves will even come to her defense from what we saw from the bodies littered around Rebekah when she woke up after taking an arrow to the heart during the melee.  Not that either is going to stop the witches from trying their damndest before she gives birth. Well…if they are intending to do something bad to her of course.  Abduction doesn’t always come with the intent to murder, however the crossbows they were carrying does make one think otherwise.

CW
Speaking of witches, Davina got to leave the attic to come out and play tonight and we got to see how powerful she can be.  When she wasn’t making vampire blood boil beneath the skin she was making goo goo eyes at some violin-playing guy named Tim. They went to school together before she had to leave blah blah it’s not important. But this is another instance of Klaus manipulating someone through their love for someone else as he makes Davina think she harmed Tim, then he offers to heal him while conveniently making him forget everything.  He can’t have Tim remember he tossed him over the balcony and then as an afterthought, dropped his violin after to land near him. If you didn’t laugh at the face Klaus made when he did that then there’s no hope for you.  It’s important to remember that, like Hayley, the witches want Davina too and even if you could assume it’s to protect her they just as easily could be trying to hurt her.  Who says Marcel is lying when he’s telling her he’s protecting her from them?  With great power comes a whole hell of a lot of people trying to crush it.

CW
Now, don’t go feeling too terrible for Davina. Sure she lost Tim, but she has a new friend in the attic of that creepy old church, Elijah!  Yes, apparently when she pulled the dagger out it undid its magic somehow.   Maybe she missed the heart when she was stabbing it back in... who knows? It also seemed to give him weird memory telepathy with Rebekah who was able to figure out where he was using a plan to go from house to house until she finds the right shutters, so suck on that Klaus!  I have a lot of mixed feelings about Elijah coming back into the mix especially what with the trainwreck that was the re-shot pilot--it did that character no favors except to show him as the too-noble party pooper he is when it comes to his brother.  But I’m nothing if not able to give him a second chance.  I’d love nothing more than to see the three remaining original siblings work together as a cohesive unit… until Klaus inevitably daggers one of them again.
